The Esquire's embellishment of precisely carved ridges around its entire frontal arch is a creative immitation of the front of a 15th Century Knight's helmet. The ridges represent the ventialtion slits on historical great helms that were not only known for their protective functionality but also their beautiful craftmanship. Historically, Esquires were Knights in training, and their helmets were a refelction of their hierarchy in society.
